Busting Content Repurposing Myths

"busting content repurposing myths" from Anna Schild

There are SO many weird misconceptions floating around online about content repurposing, and as a Content Repurposing Strategist, I hate to see it!

Some people think it’s lazy. Some people think it’s just copying and pasting. Some people think they need years worth of content before they can even start.

Meanwhile I’m over here wanting to shake business owners by the shoulders because repurposing is genuinely one of the BEST ways to make content creation feel easier and more sustainable. If you have ever thought one of these things before about content repurposing and let it keep you from living a better biz babe life, then I’ve got a few myths I’m going to bust for you and change your mindset!

(Want to hear even more about this? Listen to my Content & Chill podcast episode on Roadblocks Holding You Back from Content Repurposing!)

Content Repurposing Myth #1: “I Need to Have Years of Pre-created Content to Repurpose From”

Content repurposing is a strategy you can utilize no matter how long you have been creating content. As long as you are putting content out on just one platform, that can be repurposed! Repurposing isn’t reserved for influencers with 8 years of content sitting in a vault somewhere. It’s just about using your existing ideas more strategically.

Content Repurposing Myth #2: “My Audience Will Know That I Repurposed This and Will Get Annoyed Seeing the Same Content Over and Over”

I promise you… people are not studying your content calendar that closely! People's attention spans online are incredibly thin, so it actually works in your favor to make sure you're sending out your valuable message as many times as you can. Most of your audience isn't going to read all of your Instagram posts, watch all of your stories, and listen to every podcast episode you put out. Your audience isn't going to notice if a piece of content is repurposed, especially if you do it the right way!

If they don't tune into the podcast, maybe they'll see the blog. If they don't see the blog, maybe they'll see the Instagram post. Our dream clients are out there living their lives, and our message is just one tiny piece of what they may see in a day. And what if, on the slight chance, they do see every single thing you post? Research shows that it takes at least seven views for someone to take action on whatever it is you're sharing!

Content Repurposing Myth #3: “It’s Just a Transcription”

This one pains me every time! Because YES transcripts are incredibly helpful when repurposing content. But repurposing is SO much more than copying a transcript and dumping it somewhere else. Transcribing your content is just a basis to go off of and pick apart your pillar content into the different main points you need.

There is an art form and strategy behind it! What you would share and highlight on your blog will differ from what you would do on your podcast or your Instagram. Each platform has a different function, so you must keep that in mind when repurposing and stretching your content.

Content Repurposing Myth #4: “I Have to Have Video or Audio Content in Order to Repurpose”

While it is great to have video and audio content to repurpose, that’s not the only form of content you can repurpose. There is so much gold and value already worked into copy content that you have. What about your email newsletters, blogs, freebies, Facebook memories, workbooks, journal prompts, and so much more!

I’ve even repurposed content from books my clients have written and even copy they have on their website. As long as you have a juicy piece of pillar content to repurpose from, it doesn’t matter how you get it.

Why Every Business Owner Should Be Repurposing Content

Repurposing content does NOT make you repetitive, lazy, uncreative, or “less original.” It actually makes your content strategy more sustainable. You’re already spending time creating valuable content for your business. The goal is to stop letting that content disappear after one Instagram post, one email, or one podcast episode. Because chances are, there’s still SO much value sitting in content you already created months (or even years) ago.

But if you are sitting there thinking I know I should be repurposing my content but I have absolutely no idea where to start, then we need to connect! Whether you want strategic support through a content repurposing audit or fully done-for-you repurposing support, I help turn your existing content into actual strategic content ideas so you can stop starting from scratch every week. Get in touch and let’s talk about how content repurposing can help your business!
