How to Repurpose Instagram Content for TikTok (Step-by-Step Strategy)
Why Repurposing Instagram Content for TikTok Makes So Much Sense
Before we get into the actual process, letβs make one thing clear: repurposing your Instagram content for TikTok does not mean copying and pasting everything exactly as-is. Instagram and TikTok are different platforms. They have different cultures, content styles, and expectations from the audience.
Instagram can be more curated and design-heavy. TikTok tends to reward content that feels direct, conversational, relatable, and native to the platform. BUT that doesnβt mean your Instagram content canβt work there! It just means you need to adapt it.
Your Instagram content already holds the idea, message, story, or teaching point. TikTok just needs a slightly different delivery. So instead of sitting down and asking βwhat should I post on TikTok?β think of it more like βwhat have I already said that would work really well on TikTok if I reshaped it?β
Step 1: Go Through Your Instagram Content Bank
Surprisingly, my first step was not sitting down and brainstorming brand-new TikTok ideas. I went straight into my content bank in Notion!
If you already have a content bank, this is where it becomes your absolute bestie. A content bank makes it so much easier to review what youβve already created, spot patterns, and pull out posts that deserve a second life. If you donβt have a content bank yet, donβt panic. You can still do this manually.
Hereβs what I recommend:
Open Instagram on your desktop and pull up your profile on one side of your screen. On the other side, open a Google Doc, Notion page, Apple Notes, or whatever you like using to organize ideas.
Then scroll through your feed and copy/paste links to the Instagram posts you think could work well on TikTok.
As you go, jot down a quick note next to each link. Just a few words about why you chose it or how you might want to repurpose it.
The goal here is not to perfectly plan every post yet, but to collect the raw material. When I did this, I pulled 40 Instagram posts that I knew had TikTok potential.
Step 2: Sort Your Instagram Posts by TikTok Format
Once I had my 40 posts pulled, I categorized them based on how I wanted to repurpose each one. I sorted my posts into three main TikTok content types:
Talking video scripts
TikTok carousels
Repurposed Reels with updated text
This made the whole process feel instantly more manageable because I knew exactly what each post was becoming.
Step 3: Create a Balanced TikTok Posting Plan
Once I had my 40 posts categorized, I did not sit down and try to create all 40 TikToks in one day! That is how you burn yourself out before you even start. Instead, I turned those posts into a posting plan. When youβre starting on a new platform, you want your content to feel balanced. You donβt want to post 10 educational videos in a row and then suddenly disappear into personal storytelling. You also donβt want your first few posts to feel random or disconnected. You want people to get a clear sense of who you are, what you talk about, and why they should stick around. You canβt assume they already understand your business, your personality, your offers, or your whole vibe. So part of your TikTok strategy needs to include reintroducing yourself.
Step 4: Make the Content Sound Like You Talking
One of the biggest mistakes people make when repurposing written content into video is keeping it too written! TikTok is a conversational platform, so if your script sounds like a blog post, sales page, or Instagram caption, itβs going to fall short.
When I turn an Instagram post into a TikTok script, I literally ask myself βwould I say this out loud?β You want your scripts to sound like youβre explaining something to a business bestie over coffee, not presenting a corporate webinar.
Step 5: Donβt Forget to Adjust the CTA
Your call to action also needs to make sense for TikTok. If your Instagram caption says βclick the link in my bio,β that may not translate perfectly depending on how youβre using TikTok and what links you have set up. You may need to adjust your CTA to something more platform-appropriate, like βhit follow so you donβt miss the next video in the seriesβ Especially when youβre new on TikTok, engagement-based CTAs can be really helpful because they invite conversation and help you start building community.
The Simple Instagram-to-TikTok Repurposing Workflow
Hereβs the quick version of the process:
Go through your Instagram content bank or feed.
Pull posts that could work well on TikTok.
Categorize each post by format: talking video, TikTok carousel, or repurposed Reel.
Create a balanced posting plan.
Rewrite the hook for TikTok.
Turn captions or carousel text into conversational scripts.
Adjust the CTA for TikTok.
Create in small batches.
Post consistently without starting from scratch.
